Have you ever sat by a river on a warm summer day and watched as the current gently carried a leaf down stream? Perhaps you returned on a cold, windy day to find that this same river had dramatically changed. Reflecting the grey sky above and the depths below, the river had darkened, and strong currents had created ominous waves that pounded the shore with great force.
The changing currents of life affect us all. At times, life currents are gentle and refreshing, like a calm river, inviting us to play, laugh, and love. Life seems effortless and good. At other times, with little or no warning, life currents intensify in response to strong winds and surging waters; events or experiences that seem to overwhelm our ways of coping. Strong emotions can surface like waves in a storm. Just as strong currents can churn up the river bed creating murky waters, life currents can churn up unresolved issues of the past that cloud our ability to function well.
Counselling can provide a place to discover how to navigate life currents to restore your health and wellbeing. Clarifying and voicing your experience can have an empowering effect; increasing self-awareness, self-esteem, hope, and problem-solving abilities. Resilience grows as you notice a renewed inner strength and increased ability to cope. At times, the counselling process can stir up the murky waters even more. This is normal. As you continue to work on understanding how your experiences affect your mind, body, and spirit, you may discover that the currents of life can be opportunities for growth in all areas of life.
